Indonesian band Peterpan will tour Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia next month, writes DENNIS CHUA. POPULAR Indonesian rock group Peterpan will be on its Peterpan Malaysia Tour 2008 from April 19-27.
The group will be performing at Tawau Sports Complex in Sabah, on April 19, Stadium Perpaduan in Kuching, Sarawak (April 20), Johor Baru City Council Indoor Stadium in Johor (April 26) and Stadium Negara in Kuala Lumpur (April 27).
The tour, presented by Celcom, will see the group from Bandung perform its famous hits such as Ada Apa Denganmu, Topeng, Kukatakan Dengan Indah, and of course, the monster hit Mungkin Nanti.
Peterpan’s members are lead vocalist Nazril Irham or Ariel, guitarist Mohammad Kautsar Hikmat or Uki, drummer Ilsyah Ryan Reza or Reza and guitarist Loekman Hakim or Loekman.
The group, formed in 2000, started off playing chart-topping Indonesian songs as well as the hits of Western rock groups such as U2, Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Coldplay in cafes.
In 2002, it had its big break when three of its songs, namely, Mimpi Yang Sempurna, Sahabat and Taman Langit, were included in an Indonesian pop compilation album Kisah 2002 Malam.
Taman Langit also became the name of Peterpan’s debut album, launched in 2003. The album sold 650,000 copies.
In 2004, Peterpan held a 24-hour marathon concert in seven Indonesian cities, namely, Medan, Padang, Pekanbaru, Lampung, Semarang, Jakarta and Surabaya.
Peterpan’s second album, Bintang Di Syurga, was launched the same year. It sold three million copies. This album spawned the hit song Ada Apa Denganmu.
In 2005, the group received the Favourite Indonesian Artiste award at the MTV Asia Awards.
That same year, Peterpan received 11 nominations for the Indonesian Music Awards, and won Best Band, Best Album, Best Graphic Design For An Album, and Best Production And Lyrics.
In 2006, Peterpan again won the Favourite Indonesian Artiste Award of MTV Asia. The following year, it represented Indonesia in the Korean Song Festival in Seoul, South Korea.
